CP Car No. 54233 Driving End
A Historic Underground Car
The photographs on the centre spread of this issue tell the story of a historic London Transport car which is being withdrawn from service in February this year. As mentioned in the last Quainton News, the Society is making an appeal for funds to save No. 54233 and all donations should be sent to our Treasurer, marked 54233 Car Appeal.
In the past months No. 54233 has carried 18" by 6" strip posters headed 'Please Help Us to Preserve this Historic Underground Car'. Three photographs appeared on the poster and are reproduced on pages 12 and 13. The text read : This underground car, in which you are now travelling, was built from the remains of two similar cars, both damaged during the London blitz. It is an example of the skill and resourcefulness that kept London moving in the wartime years and was featured in a famous underground poster. Towards the end of this year, as new rolling stock is delivered, this car will be withdrawn from service and sold for scrap. With the co-operation of London Transport, the Quainton Railway Society (a Registered Charity) is raising an appeal to purchase this historic vehicle, so that it may be placed on display at their railway preservation centre, where it would join other London Transport locomotives and vehicles already in safe keeping.
Our thanks are due to Bernard Harding, who has been working hard towards this venture, and we will make him a happy man when the fund reaches the target.
