This book has been compiled by the Editor of Quainton News and published by the Quainton Railway Society to mark the inauguration of passenger services on the Stockton and Darlington Railway on 27th September 1825, 150 years ago.

The Quainton Railway Society is a Registered Charity and has as its objectives the preservation, in perpetuity of the rolling stock, premises and all other property in the care of the Society, so that future generations will be able to see and understand the mode of transport which has been of such immense benefit to civilisation. The Society is not a profit making organisation and is absolutely non-commercial. In writing the book the author has carried out original research but acknowledges the considerable help he has obtained from previously published books and articles. In particular the work produced by The Railway Correspondence & Travel Society and written by Mr D L Bradley, The Locomotives of the London & South Western Railway has been of real value. Excerpts have also been taken from The Southern Railway Magazine and from notes which have appeared in The Railway Observer. Photographs have been credited wherever the person is known and grateful thanks are given for permission to reproduce them. Where the name of the photographer is unknown the Editor expresses his regrets and sincerely hopes that the Society's worthy motives will be considered an adequate reason for the omission of an expression of appreciation [Note 1].

Notes:
1 - Similarly this electronic "facsimile" of the 1974 publication once again thanks all authors and photographers who supplied material 40+ years ago.

The text in this Quainton Railway Society publication was written in 1974 and so does not reflect events in the 40+ years since publication. The text and photographs are repeated verbatim from the original publication, with only a few minor grammar changes but some clarifying notes are added as deemed necessary.  The photos from the original publication are provided as scans in this internet version of this long out of print publication.
